Archaeology Month Events, Hikes and Walks at Red Rock State Park

(Phoenix, AZ - February 26, 2010) - During the month of March 2010, Red Rock State Park will be open from 8am to 5pm daily. The programs for the month are:

Early Survival Methods Used by the Sinagua Indians: March 7, 2010 at 10:30 am
On Sunday, March 7, join us to learn about some of the early survival methods used by the Sinagua Indians over a thousand years ago. Join Roy Julian in weaving sandals made from yucca fiber at 10:30am. Observe four prehistoric fire starting methods as demonstrated by Al Cornell at 11:30am. At 12:30pm, learn about the atlatl and dart, an earlier form of the bow and arrow. Participate in throwing this instrument with Bob Sizemore.

What's New in Sedona Geology?: March 7, 2010 at 2 pm
Geologist and award-winning author Wayne Ranney will present a program on "What's New in Sedona Geology?" on Sunday, March 7 at 2pm in the theater at Red Rock State Park. Sedona is well known for its beautiful red rock scenery, yet geologists are still making discoveries as they unearth the cryptic secrets of the origin of the landscape.

Reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. Call 282-6907 for additional information or restrictions. Program is free with paid admission to the Park.

Geology Hike: March 14, 2010
On the second Sunday, visitors can join a volunteer on a guided geology hike through Red Rock State Park. You will learn why the rocks are red, where they came from, where they are going, and more. This hike includes the Eagle's Nest Trail for a great view of the Park and surrounding area. More than a guided hike, this is an interpretive experience for the beginner as well as advanced geologist. The hike lasts for 2 to 2 ½ hours and has a 250-feet elevation climb. Enjoy an afternoon with our knowledgeable volunteer guide who will explain the rock formations that create the scenic backdrop of Red Rock State Park. Bring water and wear suitable shoes or boots.

Daily Guided Nature Walks, 10 am: Daily at 10am, visitors can join a naturalist on a guided nature walk, lasting 1½ to 2 hours, which will introduce them to the riparian ecosystem of Oak Creek and other aspects of the Park. Plants, wildlife, geology, history, and archeology are some of the subjects that may be discussed.

Daily Activity, 2pm: Daily at 2 pm, the Park hosts either a guest speaker or a ranger/naturalist-led activity of approximately 45 minutes. Programs may include a nature-hike, a special presentation, or an educational/nature video. This program may be an indoor or outdoor activity.

Wednesday and Saturday Bird Walks, 8 am: On Wednesday and Saturday morning Bird Walks at 8am during March, bird enthusiasts can join a naturalist for a "Guided Bird Walk." Beginning as well as advanced birders are welcome. Rangers recommend that visitors bring their own binoculars. A limited number are available for loan from the Park.

Arizona's famous Oak Creek meanders through Red Rock State Park creating a diverse riparian habitat for plants and wildlife. It provides the backdrop for our special hikes that are a regular part of the Park's environmental program.

For more information or reservations call (928) 282-6907. Red Rock State Park is located at 4050 Lower Red Rock Loop in Sedona. Red Rock State Park will be open daily in March from 8am to 5pm. Visitor Center hours are 9am to 5pm.

Park Entrance Fee is $10 per vehicle for up to 4 adults, each additional adult is charged $3 each. (There is no charge for children). A $3 per person entrance fee applies to pedestrians, equestrians and bicyclists.
